Why Long Island Rehab and Nursing Facilities Recommend Affordable Bathtub Conversions

September 29, 2026

Discharge planners and social workers across Nassau and Suffolk County are coordinating home safety for patients every day, most of them seniors heading home after a hip replacement, a knee replacement, a stroke, or a fall. When a bathroom modification comes up, facility staff want a straightforward answer to one question: can we trust the person we're pointing this family toward. Here's what we think that answer should include.

What We've Seen Across Long Island

I've been doing step-in bathtub conversions on Long Island since 2011. In that time, Affordable Bathtub Conversions has worked with families coming home from dozens of rehab and nursing facilities across Nassau and Suffolk County, often on a tight timeline, sometimes on the day of discharge itself.

Most of the calls we get are from an adult son or daughter, not the patient, trying to get a parent's house ready while also managing everything else that comes with a parent's recovery. We've seen what happens when the bathroom isn't ready, and what changes when it is.

Every installation is personal. One of our expert installers shows up on time, treats the family’s bathroom as he would his own (we clean up!), and we treat the family's timeline like it matters.

Why Facility Staff Work With Us

We provide phone and photo bathroom assessments while a patient is still in your facility, so a plan is in place before discharge day, not after, and so the adult child coordinating from a distance doesn't need to be physically present for an assessment to happen.

We're licensed, bonded, and insured, and we provide an itemized written estimate for every job, at no charge, whether or not the family moves forward.

Installations are completed in under three hours, with no demolition and no mess, which fits inside almost any discharge timeline and doesn't add disruption to a senior's home during an already stressful transition.

We're familiar with VA HISA grant documentation for veteran patients, and can format estimates the way the application requires.

A Complete Safety Solution, Not Just A Tub Cut

A step-in shower conversion from Affordable Bathtub Conversions includes a precision-cut walk-in step, ADA-informed grab bar placement, a slip-resistant surface, and a handheld shower attachment, all completed in a single visit. It's a full safety solution, not a partial fix, and it's built specifically for patients whose mobility has changed (sometimes temporarily, sometimes permanently) since their last time using that bathroom.

How A Referral Works

If your facility wants to point a family toward us, or refer directly, here's what happens. A family member, often an adult child, or staff member calls or has us reach out. We do a phone or photo assessment of the home bathroom, which works whether the family is local or coordinating from out of state. We provide a written estimate within a day or two at no charge. Once approved, we schedule installation, often within days of that approval. There's no paperwork on your end, and no obligation for the family if they decide not to proceed.

What Facility Staff Tell Us Helps Most

The facilities we work with most often tell us two things make the biggest difference for the families they're coordinating with: knowing that an assessment doesn't require anyone to physically visit the home before discharge, and having a specific price to share instead of a vague "it depends," since most families are already managing enough uncertainty. We built our process around both of those.

Who We Work With

We work directly with discharge planners, social workers, occupational and physical therapists, and admissions coordinators across Nassau and Suffolk County. If your facility handles a steady volume of home discharges, most of them seniors returning home after joint replacement, stroke recovery, or a fall, and wants a reliable contractor relationship for bathroom safety referrals, we'd welcome that conversation.

Frequently Asked Questions

Are you licensed, bonded, and insured?

Yes, which is part of what makes our estimates usable for documentation purposes, including VA HISA grant applications.

Do you work with facilities directly, or only with families?

Both. Some facilities refer families to us directly, and some coordinate with us as part of discharge planning. Either way works.

Is there a cost to the facility for a referral relationship?

No. There's no cost or obligation to your facility. The consultation and estimate are free to the family as well.

What areas do you serve?

All of Nassau and Suffolk County, from the North Shore to the East End.

Most of our patients' families are coordinating discharge remotely. Does that work with your process?

Yes. Phone and photo assessments were built for exactly that situation, and we regularly work with adult children managing a parent's discharge from out of state.

What if the adult child managing this lives out of state?

That's common, and it doesn't slow things down. We can coordinate an assessment using photos taken by a family member, home health aide, or facility staff, and communicate estimates and scheduling entirely by phone or email.
